Barcelona hosts the World Design Weeks’ headquarters and BcD takes over the presidency

10 September

The global network World Design Weeks, founded in 2016 by Barcelona, Helsinki, Netherlands, San Francisco, Toronto, Mexico city, Beijing, Seul and Tokio world design weeks, has decided to move its headquarters from Helsinki to Barcelona.

Barcelona Design centre will host the headquarters in its own, located at Disseny Hub Barcelona, thus reinforcing the strategic importance of this building which has the main goal of representing, developing and exhibiting the creative talent of the city at a local and international scale.

For the Tourism and Creative Industries councillor, Xavier Marcé, this decision is “great news, as it links with the city council’s government will to position this sector among the economy’s strategic aims, and at the same time it is an opportunity for creativity and design to become a supportive element in the international projection of Barcelona”.

This change has coincided with some changes at its Board of Directors. Since this May, the presidency has been assumed by Isabel Roig, manager of Barcelona Design centre and Barcelona Design Week.

On the other hand, the vicepresidency is taken over Emilio Cabrero, manager of Design Week Mexico, and Ingrid van der Wacht, International & Public Affairs of Dutch Design Week. The other members of the Board are representatives from Helsinki, Los Angeles, Bogota, Seul, Beijing and Tokio design weeks.

The organisation, home of 40 design weeks and festivals from around the world, faces a common challenge to reconsider strategies on how to celebrate events with a big number of local and international visitors, now being 100% digital. The collaboration and exchange of experiences and good practices will be key in the months to come.

This is good news for Barcelona, a city with innovation and design on its DNA, a city loved by the creative community from other cities of the world, already willing to come back and visit.

At Barcelona Design centre we host the organisation with much joy and we will work to strengthen the bond between Barcelona Design Week and the other members, always attentive to international opportunities for the city and the design sector that may rise in the years to come.
